Set Your Salary Expectations Early On [Facebook LIVE Episode #19 on Round One Interviews]

Salary expectations are being discussed earlier now – on the job application or during an initial “casual” conversation with HR. One underlying reason for this shift is that there are rules in place that are making it illegal to ask a job candidate about his salary history. This came about for various reasons including that it could be discriminatory if a salary were limited to prior earnings in situations where prior earnings were low (for a myriad of reasons).

HR as a result needs a starting point and it will come from you – they are experts in getting this information from job candidates. In light of this trend, you must go into round one with a solid business case as to why you deserve your desired salary and you’ll need to leave your emotions and personal commitments out of it.
