This piece of advice is the one that sends my clients kicking and screaming. Yet, it has the potential to “bubble wrap” you from staying unemployed long.
If you want to stand out, then you need to stand for something in the job market and become a thought leader. This tip is intimidating because people will judge you. I have done this by writing across publications. Medium and LinkedIn are free and easy to get into. You too can publish your thinking in both.
I remember the first time that I published a piece. I was sweating bullets overthinking the right topic. It took me days to build the courage to hit publish on my website. When it went out into the world I felt naked. Fast forward two years and thousands of words. When I wrote my questions to ask HR piece for Forbes, it took me 45-minutes. That piece has 1,148,000-plus views. You too can stand out now by thinking like a thought leader. You too can write a piece to get noticed and attract more interviews. It takes guts and having an idea. Hint: so many people get hung-up on the great idea part so I included one in my blog to get that hurdle out of your way.
You want to stand out now or later in the job market?
Write an article about your industry. For example, do you work in the oil and gas field? Here’s a topic: how would you manage the current situation in Texas. Hurricane Harvey led to 15 oil refineries going offline. If you write your opinion, then you’ll spark a conversation in your industry. Write enough in your industry to become a thought leader.
In this episode, watch for how you can get more job interviews by using this idea. Your goal in thinking as a thought leader is not about being arrogant. It’s about putting yourself on the right radars.
