Demolish Networking Jitters [Facebook LIVE episode #4 on Standing Out]

Youtube Melissa Llarena demolish networking jitters (1)

Here’s a really important question: who do you know — that your networking contact should get to know given his goals?

The next time you have an informational interview set-up I want you to do this: shift your thinking from how can I get more intros out of this connection to how can I give them intros during this engagement.  This strategy is a surefire way to get over the nerves involved in traditional networking.

It helps to strike a conversation with a contact by offering to introduce them to important people. The key is that you figure out who would be important to them. This is easier when you are forging relationships with sales, recruiters, entrepreneurs or anyone who relies on gathering new leads. However, wouldn’t it feel better if you went to an informational interview with some contacts in your back pocket to share as a thank you for someone’s time?

A personal example of when this worked was when I bartered for business consulting from an ex-McKinsey consultant on my coaching practice – anyone wonder how much money I saved? Let’s just say oodles of dollars. I bartered in exchange for sharing my Rolodex of retail leads with this ex-consultant who is now the co-founder of a start-up that provides omni-channel customer service solutions for retailors.

In this episode, watch for the ways that you can engage your contacts so that they will think of you when an opportunity opens up in their field. You can do this by opening up your Rolodex first thereby making them feel like they owe you a well-deserved favor.
